Aussie newlywed’s heartwarming act before he drowned at Bali beach during honeymoon
New details have emerged about an Adelaide father who drowned during his honeymoon in Bali just nine days after getting married.
An Adelaide father who drowned during his honeymoon in Bali, just nine days after getting married, had taken part in a heartwarming act for charity before he died.
Jacob Vennix, 32, was celebrating his honeymoon with his new wife Kimberly Ann Fuller, 38, when he was swept out to sea at Pasut Beach, about 30km west of Denpasar, about 3.50pm local time on Monday.
The couple, who tied the knot on December 21, were swimming in the estuary when Mr Vennix was pulled out into choppy waters by a strong current while his wife was stuck on the shore.
Footage seen by NewsWire shows Ms Fuller trying to get people’s attention to help her husband, before attempting to enter the water with a chair in an effort to reach him, as people watch on, unable to assist.
In a GoFundMe set up to support Ms Fuller, her sister, Claire Brown, has revealed her brother in law ran a 12km race blindfolded to raise money for charity and set to start a career in disability support, before he died.
“Kimberley and Jacob met in February 2022 at a Coles supermarket when Jacob saw his now-stepson Isaac playing with a Guide Dogs donation box,” she wrote in the GoFundMe.
“Ironically, in a twist of fate two years later their son Cole was born with a bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia impacting his vision.”
In September, Mr Vennix ran the Lumary City-Bay Fun Run in Adelaide blindfolded, guided by his partner, to raise money for Guide Dogs SA/NT and “raise awareness that vision-impaired people can do the same things as those with full sight”.
He raised $4,300 from the event.
“Jacob was an adoring husband and doting father who was looking forward to married life and a new career,” Ms Brown added.
“Jacob recently resigned from his employment to embark on a career in disability support, a career close to his heart.”
Ms Brown said Ms Fuller, who is “always there for others”, now faces the unexpected challenge of raising her two young sons as a single mother.
“Kimberley is incredibly resilient and reluctantly has agreed for me to reach out to her friends and the community for some financial support,” she wrote.
Ms Fuller earlier shared a heartbreaking tribute on Facebook, posting a photo of herself and her husband holding hands taken on their last night together.
“He was the most beautiful human, partner and father,” she wrote.
“All he wanted was to marry me and love and look after me and the boys. I will make sure the boys know what an angel he was. Now an angel in heaven. I love you my darling. I’m so sorry.”
Police said a local fisherman had rushed out in his boat to help the honeymooner when he was swept to sea, but nature intervened in the rescue.
Tabanan Police spokesperson I Gusti Made Berata said when the fisherman was able to help Mr Vennix on-board his vessel despite shifting currents, a large wave flipped the boat.
“Some locals and the victim’s wife who were waiting on the beach immediately tried to save the victim.
“The victim’s condition was unconscious.”
Mr Vennix was then swept to shore by a wave but was found unconscious.
He was rushed to Tabanan Public Hospital, where he later died.
Mr Berata said the honeymooners were swimming at a spot known to have different currents meet at the Pasut Beach estuary, according to The Advertiser.
“They are swimming on the estuary area, right in front of the entry access into Pasut Beach,” he said.
“The estuary area is the meeting point of current from different direction.”
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) spokeswoman said it was providing consular assistance to Mr Vennix’s family.
“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” she said.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong also extended her sympathies to his family.
“I am heartbroken for Mr Vennix’s wife and loved ones, and offer my deepest sympathies,” Ms Wong said.
“I know all Australians will be thinking of them.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and our consular officials in Bali will continue to provide consular assistance.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also expressed his sadness after hearing the tragic news.
“This is such deeply sad news,” Mr Albanese wrote on social media.
“Our thoughts are with Jacob’s wife, family and friends.”
The GoFundMe has raised over $30,700 at the time of publication.
