These are the flights suspended in Australia due to coronavirus

Australia’s airlines are dramatically suspending flights across the country. While domestic travel is allowed, it’s about to become very difficult.

Qantas grounds international flights and stands down staff during coronavirus outbreak

For the first time in history, Australians have been warned “do not travel” overseas by the federal government due to the risk of transmission of coronavirus. But what about domestic travel?

While Prime Minister Scott Morrison said domestic air travel was considered “low risk” for contracting the contagion, flight cancellations and changing state border rules may leave some interstate destinations all but impossible to visit.

In an Australian first, the Tasmanian Government has announced that from tonight all non-essential travellers to the island will have to self-isolate for 14 days upon entry. This will apply to holiday-makers from the mainland.

“We are going to introduce the toughest border measures in the country. Only essential travellers will be allowed into Tasmania without going into quarantine,” Premier Peter Gutwein said as he declared a state of emergency for Tasmania.

“This is a tough, but necessary decision to flatten the curve, putting Tasmanians’ health and wellbeing first."

There is a push for the Northern Territory and Western Australia to take a similar approach.

Meanwhile, Australia’s airlines have responded to plummeting volumes of air travellers by making dramatic cuts to domestic services. Qantas and Jetstar have slashed domestic capacity by 60 per cent, while across Virgin Australia and Tigerair, domestic capacity has been cut by half.

This involves scaling back flights to tourist destinations such as Hamilton Island, Uluru, Lord Howe Island and the Gold Coast, as well as flights between capital cities.

Jetstar, for example, has suspended all of its services to Darwin.

These are the domestic flights that have been suspended by Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Tigerair. Passengers with existing bookings should check with their carriers as they may be able to cancel bookings in exchange for flight vouchers.
