Influencer and fitness model Tammy Hembrow has hit out at critics who questioned her decision to fly overseas while 32 weeks pregnant.

The 27-year-old, who is currently lapping up the sun and sand while on a ‘babymoon’ in the Maldives, flew business class alongside her son Wolf, daughter Saskia and fiance Matt Poole.

Generally speaking, commercial air travel before week 36 of pregnancy is considered safe if you have a healthy pregnancy.

However Hembrow was forced to defend her decision to some of her 14.5 million followers who deemed her decision as “risky”.

“Flying this pregnant,” one critic wrote. “She could develop a blood clot, go into labour mid-flight, have labour complications and not have proper medical treatment, etc. There are tons of reasons not to fly in your third trimester.”

Another said that while “uncommon” she ended up going into labour at 33 weeks, and that childbirth doesn’t always go to plan.

“Wow Ur [sic] game to fly that pregnant,” the woman said.

“There was no way I would risk having a baby overseas or on a plane.

“Mine came at 33 weeks without warning. It’s so unpredictable with birth and we don’t know how good the healthcare is overseas … your life, your choice though, I’m more of a worry wort than most,” she wrote.

Hembrow, who flew business class with Singapore Airlines, responded to critics saying she was given the all-clear to travel by health professionals.

“My midwife said it’s perfectly fine. Fit and healthy and so is bub,” the 27-year-old said.

“I’m only 32 weeks haha not about to have this baby on a plane.”

According to Singapore Airlines, “uncomplicated single pregnancies” can fly between 29 to 36 weeks providing the woman can produce a medical certificate stating they are fit enough to travel, the exact number of weeks pregnant and the estimated date of delivery.

The certificate must be dated within 10 days of the first flight after 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Last month, the social media influencer opened up about her recent health struggles on Instagram following the results of a blood test.

“My doctor text me my blood results and said I am fully anaemic now,” she said in her Stories in March.

“It probably explains why I am so tired all the time.”

Anaemia occurs when a person lacks enough healthy red blood cells to adequately oxygenate the body’s tissues.

The fitness model and influencer questioned why she would be anaemic given she consumes iron supplements and eats “lots of spinach”.

“I am doing everything [because] I had low iron in the beginning [of my pregnancy], so I have been trying to consume a lot of iron,” she said.

Hembrow went on to say she would now have to have an iron infusion.
