Man caught on camera spray painting grapes in street market
WE’RE always told to be careful eating street food, but what this market vendor was caught on camera doing to fruit is something else.
TOURISTS have been warned about buying fruit from street markets after a vendor was caught on camera engaging in a shady act.
A video secretly filmed by British tourist Layla Khan, 23, shows the market vendor in Pakistan spray painting a bunch of white grapes a more vibrant shade of red, presumably before selling them to unwitting buyers.
The vendor can be seen in the video crouching behind the stall and using a can of spray paint by the brand Win to recolour the fruit.
Ms Khan, who works as a carer, came across the shady act when her aunt got sick with diarrhoea after eating the grapes, according to the Daily Mail.
The tourist, from Birmingham, UK, was visiting family in Afzal Pur, southeast of Islamabad, in August.
“Tourists need to keep their eyes open and be very careful in street markets like this,” she said.
“You can easily be exploited and it is very dangerous for your health.”
She said when approached, the man did not care he was “feeding people poison”.
“When we confronted him he said ‘Everyone is doing it’ and smirked,” she said.
“I saw many British people walking around — it’s a spot that is popular with tourists and a busy area.”
She said her aunt had been sick for two days and the family believed the culprit to be grapes purchased from a street vendor, which were cheaper than the supermarket.
But she said it wasn’t worth the risk.
“Tourists need to open their eyes and see what they are buying — you’d have to be blind to miss him spraying them in the street,” she said.
“Go to a supermarket to buy food to be safe — the grapes cost more but it’s worth it.”
Ms Khan said she reported the incident with the local police.
