Flights unable to land at Brisbane Airport as fog covers city causing delays, cancellations
A dozen flights were unable to land in Brisbane this morning, leading to flight delays and cancellations with a knock on effect at other major airports.
A heavy and widespread fog in Brisbane has caused flight cancellations and delays with a knock on effect at other major airports.
While it is now clear skies in the Queensland capital, about a dozen services in total were unable to land early Friday morning, Brisbane Airport spokesman Peter Doherty told news.com.au.
He said these services were diverted to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Sydney.
Flight were, however, still able to depart.
He described the weather conditions as “really heavy pea soup fog” across the city and a “little unexpected”.
Sydney Airport said there were three domestic cancellations this morning at its airport as a result of the fog in Brisbane.
“Passengers travelling to Brisbane today should check with their airline regarding the status of their flight,” a spokeswoman said.
Qantas thanked passengers for their patience as it worked to get things back in order following some delays and diversions.
Virgin Australia advised passengers travelling today to monitor their flight information as there are some flow-on delays across the east coast network.
The Brisbane Airport domestic departures board showed 15 cancelled flights for the day as of 10am.
These included flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, as well as some regional airports like Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Rockhampton.
At least another 11 flights scheduled between 8.15am and 11.30am were labelled delayed.
