Travel Deal Tuesday: The escapes to spend your tax refund on

Tax time is here, and with the possibility of getting a few extra dollars this financial year, here’s a few ways you might like to spend it.

Who is the ATO targeting this year?

With the $158 billion tax cut package officially passed through parliament and an estimated 4.5 million Aussies set to receive an extra $1080 back in tax over the next few weeks, it’s a smart time to score yourself a great mid-year travel deal.

In research commissioned by ME Bank, 48 per cent of Aussies intend to stash their tax refund away for the long term, whether as an investment or inside a savings account.

The other half, however, listed a combination of ways in which they intend to splurge their tax refund on rather than to save it.

And while a large chunk also said they would put it towards debts such as a home loan or credit card, the study showed 17 per cent hoped to put it towards a holiday.

According to Skyscanner research, if you’re planning a holiday with your refund, you’re in luck.

“Travel is so rewarding and luckily, there are plenty of holiday options to suit all budgets, making a ‘treat yourself tax-back trip’ achievable no matter the size of your refund,” Skyscanner travel expert, Emily Cairns said.

“This year, the government is promising to finalise most tax returns within 12 business days so you could be closer to booking a tax refund funded holiday than you think.”

Wotif data shows searches for Perth, Sydney and Hobart have seen the biggest increase in interest since the offset was announced, with accommodation searches up by over 15 per cent, when compared to the week prior to the announcement.

To help you get the best value out of your extra tax return this year, news.com.au’s Travel Deal Tuesday has rounded up the best package deals under $1000.
