Aldi unveils surprise move in the travel industry

The popular German retailer has just made an unexpected announcement that will leave Aussies both baffled and excited.

German supermarket giant Aldi has entered into new and unexpected territory – travel.

In a first for Aussie supermarkets, the popular retailer has taken things to a whole new level by launching the Aldi Holidays online portal.

It means Aussie shoppers can now plan their next holiday with a bunch of exclusive Aldi escapes, cruises and tour deals.

“We are excited to be taking off in a new direction to make planning and booking a holiday a more enjoyable experience for Australians and in our signature,” Rodney Balech, Group Director, Aldi Australia said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Good Different way with Aldi Holidays. This service, in partnership with Ignite Travel, will unlock incredible value and help all types of travellers create truly unforgettable experiences.

“With Aldi Holidays we’re bringing our Special Buys to the skies, offering savvy travellers premium holiday options.”

Similar to Aldi’s bi-weekly Special Buys, there will be a limited number of exclusive holiday deals, which will be available until sold out.

Some of the Aldi holidays available from October 2 include five nights in Daydream Island Resort, Whitsundays, from $899 per person twin share and seven nights in Novotel Phuket, Thailand from $599 per person twin share.

Other international packages include seven nights in the Outrigger Resort, Fiji, from $1,799 per person twin share and six nights at the Grand Mirage in Bali from $1,199 per person twin share.

Tour deals include 10 Day Best of South Africa – from $3,990 per person twin share and 10 Day Best of Sri Lanka – from $2,590 per person twin share.

Aussies keen for a cruise can enjoy nine nights on a Royal Caribbean Cruise through the Pacific Islands from $1,499 or 14 nights on Celebrity X Cruise through Japan, from $4,990.

Ryan Thomas, CEO, Ignite Travel Group said, domestic and close to home holidays are still desirable for Aussies and the company is seeing record numbers for international cruise holidays and small group touring.

“Aldi Holiday customers can expect incredible savings with these exclusively curated holiday packages including flights, local experiences and more,” Mr Thomas said, adding that it can be booked online or via the dedicated Aldi Holidays Sales Centre.

“We’re excited about the future of our partnership with Aldi,” he said.

According to the statement, escape and tour packages can be booked via the online portal, or through “robust person-to-person customer service” for Cruise packages, “to deliver the best competitive prices in the market”.
