PERCHED high above the streets of Manhattan lies one of the best views in the modern world.
The Top of the Rock, as it is known, spans three floors of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, with 360-degree panoramic views, 260 metres above ground.
It first opened to the public in 1933 but after a near 20-year closure in 1986, the spectacular sights from the middle of Manhattan were almost forgotten.

But after a $75 million makeover and a reopening in 2005, it’s quickly becoming the preferred panoramic pit stop for those looking to see city life from an entirely new perspective.
Lonely Planet says that in comparison to the Empire State Building’s rooftop views, “it’s much less crowded and has wider observation decks that span several levels”.
It starts with a multimedia-enhanced elevator ride to the top, a cacophony of colour and light.
But that’s only the entree. Once up top, you’re treated to the main course.
