Really, these are Australia's best places?

THE favourite tourist sights around the nation — and the world — have been revealed. And it’s left us wondering, did they run out of options for Australia?

THE Sydney Opera House. The Sydney Harbour Bridge. Fremantle Prison. Hang on ...

Travel website TripAdvisor has pulled together a list of the top 10 landmarks in Australia — and the world — for its annual Travellers’ Choice awards. It analysed more than 700 global landmarks based on millions of reviews by its travellers, with some surprising results.

The worldwide list reads as most would expect, with spectacular famous icons such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia the favourite, followed by Peru’s Machu Picchu and India’s Taj Mahal.

But locally, some of the inclusions are rather baffling.

Sure, nobody would bat an eyelid to find out that the Sydney Opera House took out our top spot, jumping up two places since 2014 to be named the 23rd favourite landmark in the world. But there were many other entries on the list that would leave some scratching their heads, such as the Penitentiary Chapel in Hobart and Fremantle Prison, Western Australia.

It’s left us wondering, did they run out of options? Is this the best we’ve got? Or is it just that our dark history is one of the most captivating things about our nation?
