Instagram hashtag #takemeback reveals most popular travel destinations

As that winter chill starts to settle in across Australia, the destinations we want to return to the most have been revealed.

How Instagram is ruining holidays

As that winter chill starts to settle in across Australia, nothing warms you up quite like the stream of summer selfies and sunset soirees that fill Instagram when you search the hashtag #TakeMeBack.

From picture-perfect paradise shots in Phuket, to poolside cocktails somewhere in the Mediterranean.

But as we all remain put, with the closest thing to travel set to be our own backyard, research has shown exactly where most of us yearn to revisit the most.

In a study conducted by CashNetUSA, has shown how some destinations create warmer memories than others by analysing the 208,362 Instagram posts with #TakeMeBack hashtag.

So when we can literally go back – this is where everyone wants to go:

1. Giza Pyramid Complex (Giza Governorate, Egypt)

2. Bali (Bali, Indonesia)

3. Santorini (Greece)

4. Magic Kingdom Park (Florida, United States)

5. Eiffel Tower (Île-de-France, France)

As for islands, the research shows that Bali is our most missed, followed by Santorini, the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand, Hawaii and Gili Island in Indonesia.

Closer to home, travel booking platform Wotif has revealed which regions around NSW has increased in search given the state is now open for travel.

According to the research, which is based on interest on the website from May 19-20, 2020 compared to May 12-13, 2020 for travel in June 2020, trips to Mudgee tops the list.

“What we’re seeing is that road trips and weekend escapes are most popular, with destinations including Mudgee, Batemans Bay and the Blue Mountains seeing a significant spike in interest, particularly around the June long weekend,” Wotif managing director Daniel Finch said.

“Our data shows many are looking for a quick break and some relaxation away from home after being in lockdown.”

In Queensland, which still has border restrictions in place, residents are now encouraged to travel around the state. And there, the Sunshine Coast tops the list followed by the Whitsundays and Hervey Bay.

On the west coast, the Margaret River is set to surge as restrictions around Western Australia ease, followed by Busselton and Mandurah.

Victorians are set to see holidays in the Mornington Peninsula surge as well as trips along the Great Ocean Road and to the Yarra Valley.
