Inside one of world’s most isolated homes in Western Australia

One of the most isolated homes in the world – and one of Western Australia’s most iconic houses – is up for sale for the first time in 40 years.

It’s surrounded by ocean as far as the eye can see, along with desolate highlands that make you feel like you could be the last person on Earth. Welcome to one of the world’s most isolated homes.

And now the remote Australian property, spanning 3027sq m, is on the market for the first time in four decades.

Located on Broome’s Gantheaume Point, the home sits on top of a prehistoric cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean on Western Australia’s isolated Kimberley coastline.

It’s been a ‘highly sought-after’ property since it went to market this year.

‘The Point House’, one of the world’s most isolated properties, is on the market for the first time in 40 years.

Real estate agent Caro Cunningham said the house was “probably one of the most iconic homes along the West Australian coastline”.

“You’re right on the end of Gantheaume Point so there’s no other properties around you,” she said.

According to the real estate agent, “The Point House” has been with the same owners for 40 years and was redesigned in 1996 after the original home was destroyed by fire in 1970.

“They’ve loved living there. They’re downsizing so it’s been a bit of a wrench to let it go,” she said.

The original home, which sat near the landmark Gantheaume Point lighthouse, served as the lighthouse keeper’s quarters from 1906 before it was sold to local pearler Patrick Percy.

The homes boasts ‘end of the Earth’ views of rolling turquoise waves.

The remote home is surround by endless ocean and rocky highlands.

It was later converted into a nun’s retreat and a camp for Girl Guides, and in 1996 it was rebuilt in a way that takes in the surrounding ancient environment.

The owners used handfuls of pindan clay sand native to the Kimberley region to paint the exterior walls so they blended in.

The home has five bedrooms and three bathrooms, a lounge room with cathedral-like, cedar-lined ceilings and exposed timber beams along with Chinese slate floors.

There are also three outdoor entertaining areas, including the veranda and lawn area, a central courtyard and a firepit where you can sit and watch the sunset.

Ms Cunningham said the Broome home was “highly sought after” since the pandemic had led to buyers leaving Perth for rural locations.

The house was rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire in 1970.

It was once the lighthouse keeper’s quarters before being transformed into a nun’s retreat.

“It’s a wonderful place to get away from it all,” she told the Daily Mail.

The median price of a house in Broome is $485,000 but The Point House’s size, location, history and unusual layout means it’s guaranteed to sell for a lot more.

Inspections run from September 10 until September 13 by appointment only with bidders having until October 15 to submit an offer.

It comes as pictures emerge of what’s believed to be the loneliest house in the world which laid empty on a small deserted island for nearly 100 years.

Images show the single white building perched on the side of a green hill on Elliðaey – a tiny island south of Iceland with no running water or electricity.

It’s believed the property was built by the Elliðaey Hunting Association and used for hunting trips.
