Inside Maldives video that broke TikTok
In a year when nobody could travel, TikTok became the go-to place for a virtual holiday hit. And one video in particular stole the show.
TikTok is one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the world. It now has more than 800 million active users worldwide (a statistic that was no doubt boosted by a global pandemic that meant people had plenty of spare time on their hands).
In case you haven’t had much to do with it, put simply it allows users to create and share short videos with a bunch of different features.
Earlier in the year locked down TikTok users were encouraged to find their best travel memories on their camera roll and share them on the platform.
It’s an eclectic mix of videos that makes the most-liked #travel videos on the platform.
One video posted by user @janelleelise seems to show a girl getting the perfect revenge on an inconsiderate plane passenger who keeps flicking her hair over the back of her seat. This one has been liked more than 11 million times.

Another video offered the perfect visual treat for people suffering a little wanderlust in lockdown.
Global Wanderer founder Mikki Tenazas from the Philippines posted a video of his stay at the luxe Soneva Jani resort in the Maldives, captioned “Is this the most awesome villa in the world? Can’t get enough of this slide.”

It has since been liked more than 11 million times, and has 37.6K comments.
User @YesTheory went above and beyond, by finding the least visited country in the world … then packing his bags and heading there. For that mammoth effort he garnered over 7 million likes.
Then there was visiting a capsule hotel in Japan (5.1m likes) …
… Walking on a frozen lake in Utah with a Golden Retriever (6.4m likes) …
… And tobogganing in Switzerland (3.8m likes):
Videos from Aussie TikTok users also went viral around the world in 2020. From tradies mucking around on ‘smoko’, wild and sometimes worrying fauna that roams freely in backyards, to finding out that Andrew does not run the press conference, these are some of the locally made TikTok videos that people loved this year.
