Beaches in this country are the cleanest
The beaches in this country set it apart from those in the rest of the world for one specific reason.
The beaches found in a European holiday destination are the cleanest in the world, according to latest figures.
Spain has retained its title for two years in a row, after first taking the crown in 2022.
It has 628 blue flag shores in total, more than any other country in the world.
The flags are handed out to the cleanest beaches at the start of the summer and are then withdrawn at the end of it.
By renewing awards in this way, those in charge of the programme hope to ensure that beaches are kept up to scratch.
Spain appears to keep on top of its beach cleaning, with diligent efforts rewarded by the huge number of blue flags found throughout the country.
Luxury travel magazine, Conde Nast Traveller said: “With over 600 pristine shores, Spain won a Guinness World Record in 2022 for the most Blue Flag beaches and has held the record for two consecutive years.”
Of the 600, the publication put forward their favourite option for a pristine bay in Spain.
They continued: “One of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in Spain is Burriana beach in the southern Spanish resort town of Nerja.
“This dark-golden sand beach has rental sun-loungers, well-maintained toilets, a scuba diving area and even a library. It is surrounded by a promenade full of souvenir stands, shops and a variety of restaurants.”
However, with 628 to choose from, there are plenty of others tourists can head to.
Barcelo claims that “wherever you go on Spain’s coast, you’ll come across the perfect destinations for unforgettable summer holidays”.
Included in that list are places like Isla Antilla in Huelva.
It’s described as being “surrounded by natural beauty” and has facilities such as toilets, sun loungers and a sailing school, meaning holidays makers can really make the most of their holiday there.
Barcelo also recommends visiting La Barrosa Beach in Cádiz, which they labelled as “quintessential”.
They added: “Cádiz is famous for being perfect for anyone who loves beach bars, surf-lovers, nature-lovers … so, pretty much everyone.”
Cala Ferrera cove in Mallorca and Cap Blanche in Alicante were also on their list of the best beaches in Spain.
The top five list of the destinations with the most blue flag beaches is rounded off with Greece is second place (596) and Turkey in third (551).
Behind those three are Italy (457) and then France (403).
