Australia snubbed as ‘coolest’ neighbourhoods in the worlds revealed
If you thought the streets of Newtown or the shores of Fremantle screamed cool — think again, because a new list has revealed exact where you should be hanging out.
If you thought the alleyways of Melbourne were ‘cool’, think again.
A new list revealing the trendiest neighbourhoods has been revealed, and Australian ‘hoods have been snubbed entirely from the top 10.
The annual Time Out Index list of the 51 coolest neighbourhoods around the world has been revealed, with Colonia Americana in downtown Guadalajara, Mexico, winning the crown as the Coolest Neighbourhood in the World to visit right now.
Described as the an “edgy blend of Art Deco and neoclassical mansions”, the neighbourhood is “known by many Mexicans as the country’s cultural capital, but little explored by foreigners” and also contains some of the best music venues.
“Creative locals sit with their laptops in any number of sleek cafes (try Cafe Correcto or Lluvia) and sip local tequila in dive bars on Chapultepec Avenue long into the night,” one Time Out guide said, adding some other great things to do in the neighbourhood include browsing an art gallery in Tiro Al Blanco and grabbing a coffee and some chilaquiles in the gallery’s courtyard cafe.
According to Time Out, “this year’s index saw around 20,000 city-dwellers around the world” contributing the best bits of their home towns.
“We then combined their feedback with the expertise of our local editors and contributors, to come up with a definitive ranking of where’s best to be right now,” the publication wrote.
Coming in second was Cais do Sodré in Lisbon, with contributors highlighting the city’s bars and nightclubs as well as the “burgeoning food scene”.
That was followed by Wat Bo Village in Siem Reap, Cambodia in bronze position and New York’s trendy streets of Ridgewood coming in fourth spot.
Australia made it into the top 51, but well and truly down the list. At 27th spot, Fitzroy in Melbourne was included for the suburb’s street art and modern wine bars.
“In Brunswick Street you’ll find second-hand shops, dive bars, bumping nightclubs and some of our city’s best eateries – and with vegan and veggie options on practically every block, it’s a must for plant-based eaters,” Time Out wrote.
A few spots behind, Marrickville in Sydney slipped in at the 33rd coolest neighbourhood in the world, with critics saying the “new Newtown” has its own personality emerging.
“Marrickville has been called both ‘the new Newtown’ and ‘the new Paddington’, but it’s very much its own suburb with its own distinct identity: a proper melting pot that’s as much a destination for dining as it is for auto repair and wholesale provisions.
Sneaking in 47th spot was Brisbane’s Fortitide Valley, with the publication crediting the neighbourhood’s bustling James Street, growing number of boutique stores and the ever-popular Calile Hotel.
“At night it transforms into a live-music hub, with young party-seekers descending upon the excellent range of clubs, bars and concert halls,” Arts & Culture Editor of Time Out Australia, Bianca O’Beil wrote.
“ If you want to party, this is one of the best places in Australia.”
