Qantas and Jetstar offer 100,000 reward flight to Japan for frequent flyers

Two airlines have marked Japan’s reopening in a major way by offering a staggering amount of reward flight seats to frequent flyers.

Qantas has had a ‘dramatic turnaround’ in its recent performance

Qantas and Jetstar frequent flyers can celebrate Japan reopening to the rest of the world in style, with the airlines releasing hundreds of thousands of reward seats.

From October 11, Japan is scrapping several of its most onerous Covid-related border restrictions.

Tourists are currently required to have a visa and book with a travel agent or as part of a package group, while there is a daily arrival cap of 50,000 people.

But those rules are ending from next week, with flyers only needing a vaccination certificate or a negative Covid test, taken 72 hours before flying.

To mark the occasion, Qantas and Jetstar have announced every Economy seat between Australia and Japan will be available as a Classic Flight Reward from May 11 to June 20, 2023.

In addition, all Economy seats on Jetstar flights between Australia and Japan from October 11 to November 30 will also be available as Classic Flight Rewards.

Up to 100,000 reward seats will be available across six routes during these times.

On Qantas flights between:

  • Sydney and Tokyo (Haneda)
  • Brisbane and Tokyo (Haneda)
  • Melbourne and Tokyo (Haneda)

On Jetstar flights between:

  • Cairns and Tokyo (Narita)
  • Cairns and Osaka (Kansai)
  • Gold Coast and Tokyo (Narita)

Qantas will operate two Points Planes between Sydney and Tokyo on May 10, 2023, meaning every seat in every cabin, including Business, can be booked as a Classic Flight Reward.

The airline will also offer the same deal for flights between Sydney and Hong Kong on January 20, 2023.

The additional Classic Flight Reward seats and Points Planes are available for booking until next Thursday.

Jetstar is also offering one-way fares from Cairns and the Gold Coast to Tokyo and Osaka from just $289.

The travel dates vary depending on the route, but include flights from mid-October to mid-December.

The five-day sale started at noon on Friday and will last until 11.59pm on Tuesday, unless sold out prior.

Qantas Loyalty chief executive Olivia Wirth said the company wanted to give frequent flyers a chance to use the points they had been saving up.

“Australians have been waiting to be able to return to Japan; having access to thousands of reward seats will help our frequent flyers travel to one of their most loved destinations,” she said.

“We saw a record number of points used recently when we extended our commitment of up to 50 per cent more Classic Reward seats with strong demand for travel to Japan.

“Our members love to redeem their points on travel and we’re excited to expand their opportunities with more reward seats, as well as hotels, holidays, and curated experiences.”
