Insane reason for massive queue in Melbourne
Hundreds of people have queued along Chapel St in Melbourne – including overnight – to get access to a store open for one day only.
Hundreds of Melburnians have queued along Chapel Street to get access to a shop that will be open for just one day.
Virgin Australia opened its “Velocity Frequent Flyer 1 Point Rewards Store” at 9am Saturday, letting people purchase anything in the shop for just one Velocity Frequent Flyer point.
There are domestic flights and products that usually have price tags in the hundreds of dollars.
One man at the front of the queue camped overnight with his puppy to get his mum a Dyson hair dryer for the equivalent of about $2.
A video on TikTok showed people lining up for blocks hours before the store opened.
Two FlyBuys points are worth one Velocity Frequent Flyer point, which means spending $2 at Coles, Target, or Kmart can get you one of the frequent flyer points.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Velocity Frequent Flyer chief executive Nick Rohrlach said he expected scenes like Black Friday sales.
He said some people thought it was too good to be true, but the initiative was serious.
Explaining why Melbourne was chosen as the only Australian city to have the store, Mr Rohrlach said: “There are millions of Velocity members based in Victoria so it made sense to choose Melbourne to launch this Velocity-first initiative knowing how much they love to travel.”
At the store, customers can purchase Virgin Australia one-way economy flights to the Gold Coast, Cairns, Brisbane, Hobart, Launceston, Sydney and Adelaide for one point.
They can also buy Dyson hair dryers worth $649, Dyson vacuums worth $719, Smeg toasters worth $219, Apple watches worth $399, Apple Air Pods worth $249, Weber Baby Q barbecues worth $389, Chasseau casserole dishes worth $320, Breville coffee machines worth, and Bose Bluetooth speaker worth $175.
The store will stay open for 24 hours or until sold out.
More Coverage
Virgin Australia said there were “more than 1000” products available.
A similar initiative will launch online Sunday for those located elsewhere in the country.
There will be one limited drop of products a week at a random time for four weeks, where customers can buy products and flights for one point.
