VIRGIN Australia passengers are now able to stream films, TV shows and music from the airline's in-flight entertainment system to their tablets, laptops and smartphones.

The move away from seatback screens on domestic and short-haul international flights follows a successful trial earlier this year, with 37 planes now fitted with the wireless technology.

It includes aircraft flying to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Virgin Australia chief customer officer Mark Hassell said in-flight entertainment was a key component in customer satisfaction and around 90 per cent of its customers travelled with at least one smartphone, laptop or tablet.

The roll-out across Virgin Australia's Boeing 737-800 and Embraer E190 fleet will be complete before the end of the year.

There will still be seatback entertainment on long-haul A330s and 777 planes.
