Seven foods nobody should eat on a plane

WE'VE all been there: you finally settle into your airline seat and then bam - the passenger next to you pulls out a horrible stinky meal. This food should never be eaten on board.

WE'VE all been there: you've finally settled into your airline seat only for the person next to you to pull out a meal with an odour that immediately assaults your senses.

The smell lingers for the entire flight. It's beyond inconsiderate. The total lack of respect or regard for other people exhibited by bringing something like a tuna fish sandwich on board an aeroplane is downright rude.

It's high time people started showing a little more respect and stopped bringing smelly or otherwise offensive food onto planes. It's no secret that cramped quarters on planes are becoming even tighter, making any semblance of personal space a thing of the past.

Miraculously, this move to maximise capacity and minimise seat size and leg room has coincided with two other important changes: Expanded and upgraded dining options in airports all over the world, and the rapid disappearance of complimentary, on-board meals (remember those?) for passengers not shelling it out for a first-class ticket.

This confluence of events - fewer in-flight meals, more food available in the airports and closer in-flight quarters - has created the perfect storm for bringing offensive food on-board. If your tastebuds are diminished anyway while you're flying, can't you do everyone around you a favour and wait 'til later for that tuna fish sandwich?

There are some foods no one should EVER eat on an aeroplane. Here are some of the worst offenders.

1. Tuna salad ... or tuna anything!

Need we explain? Tuna salad is one of the most distinctly awful foods to bring on a plane.

2. Chilli

We love chilli as much as the next guy, but we don't need to smell it for four hours after somebody else eats it. Meaty or vegetarian, the spices can give off an overpowering aroma that will linger in the air and may ruin chilli forever.

3. Fishy sushi and sashimi

As good as it tastes, salmon sushi and sashimi is stinky. Add wasabi to it and you've really killed the mood.

4. Egg, in any form

If you want the whole plane to smell like a rotting dumpster, by all means, enjoy your egg salad/sandwich/egg ... or better still ... don't!

5. Yoghurt

This is a tough one, but the smell of yoghurt can be nauseating if you're not the one eating it. Do us all a favour and eat it before you get on the plane.

6. Endless bags of chips

A few chips is fine. A few chips can be great! But the incessant hours of crunching that come with a super sized bag of chips can really wear on the passenger sitting at your side.

7. OK, let's make it canned fish of any kind

Opening a can of tuna, salmon, herring (or whatever fish) often requires holding one's breath or using a clothes peg. Breath mint anyone?
