Unexpected Qantas detail Aussies love

It’s not something you’d expect people to be into – or something you’ve probably even noticed, but it’s proved to be quite popular.

Who knew so many people were into the Qantas boarding theme song – but here we are and the numbers don’t lie.

The national carrier’s soundtrack is so popular, it’s been streamed more than 343,000 times on YouTube and 420,000 times on Spotify. To be fair, it’s pretty relaxing.

It’s typically played during boarding, disembarkation and throughout the in-flight entertainment system as passengers search for their next favourite movie or television show to watch.

But, for the first time in seven years, the Flying Kangaroo’s signature sound has been updated with an equally impressive tune.

Australian composer Haydn Walker, who composed the 2018 track is also behind the new sound that’s inspired by the beauty of the Aussie landscape.

It features guitar, percussion, Glockenspiel, strings (violins, violas, cello, double bass) and for the first time vocals – performed by Australian singer Meg Drummond.

Qantas said the 2018 soundtrack was made freely available during the pandemic in response to requests from customers and Frequent Flyers as the sound is often associated with travel memories.

The carrier’s new soundtrack is already proving to be a hit with Aussie musician Gflip sharing an Instagram story listening to it while in her recording studio.

“Cleaning the studio while listening to our fave airlines new boarding music (sic). It’s a smash boys.”

Catriona Larritt, Qantas chief customer officer said there is a real magic to staring at a vast landscape such as the outback or the ocean from a window at 35,000 feet “and the new soundtrack has been created to inspire travel and adventure”.

“Our customers tell us the Qantas soundtrack reminds them of their cherished travel memories, so we’ve made it available to stream so they can recapture the experience of their flight wherever they may be,” Ms Larritt told news.com.au.

It’s currently being rolled out across the airline’s regional, domestic and international network and is also available to be streamed on Spotify and Apple Music.
