Airlines to avoid

NOT all plane seats are created equal, but how do you know which spots to snap up, and which ones to avoid at all costs?

To help those in doubt, an airline has revealed the most popular — and most dreaded — mile-high spots on its aircraft.

UK-based airline EasyJet surveyed 10,000 of its passengers and analysed sales data to come up with the answers.

Seat 7F, which is a window seat located on the right side of the plane, was voted the favourite.

Window seats are generally the most coveted positions on planes, with 59 per cent of those surveyed proffering to gaze outside to escape the realities of cattle-class.

“Sales reveal the right-hand side of the plane is more popular than the left and rows 6-7 sell out fastest,” the airline said.

Adding to seat 7F’s popularity is the fact that the airline often offering discounts for seventh row seats on its short haul routes.

Meanwhile, the most unpopular seat was identified as 19C.

So what is it about this seat that passengers dread?

The airline was unable to pinpoint exactly what was behind the disdain, but said its position wasn’t exactly ideal.

“As access to toilets and exits are clear priorities for many passengers we believe it is around the perceived distance from them in row 19 — which is roughly in the middle of the aircraft, that’s why people don’t like seat 19C”,” an airline spokesperson said.

EasyJet says that nationality, age and travel companion all influence the cabin position of choice.

It found that inquisitive or nervous travellers are more likely to choose the window for the view and to observe what’s happening en route. Younger travellers also prefer the window for photo opportunities of the scenery and wing mid-flight.

But as they get older passengers are more likely to prefer to aisle seats due to the increased space and the ability to move around during the flight.

Travel website Skyscanner conducted a similar survey in 2012 and seat 6A came out on top, as it offers quick disembarking, while nobody wanted seat 31E, a middle seat towards the back of the plane.

Middle seats over the wings of the plane were also favourites as passengers say they’re less likely to feel turbulence in those positions.
