Qantas reveals two new overseas routes from Perth to Auckland and Johannesburg

Australia’s national carrier has today announced the introduction of two new overseas routes, opening up our western corridor to more parts of the world.

Qantas launches latest ultra long-haul flight from Perth to Paris

Australia’s national carrier has today announced the airline will be expanding its international network, with two additional routes to be added by the end of the year.

Qantas unveiled on Tuesday that the new routes – being Perth to Auckland and Johannesburg – are pencilled to commence from December 2025, expanding on Australia’s western gateway to the world.

CEO of Qantas International Cam Wallace said the new routes will join some of the airlines’ most popular overseas jaunts – including Perth to London and Perth to Rome, and the newly created Perth to Paris – and will expand on inbound tourism to Australia from the west.

“By connecting Perth directly with Auckland and Johannesburg, we’re supporting the local economy by opening valuable inbound tourism opportunities for Western Australia, as well as generating new jobs for the state,” Mr Wallace said in a statement.

“These routes also enable further growth throughout Australia with connections across our domestic network.

“Our new Perth to Auckland route offers a convenient one-stop connection for West Australians to New York via Auckland on our popular QF3 service while the new direct flight to Johannesburg provides a vital connection for customers in Perth to visit popular cities like Cape Town through our partnership with Airlink.”

Perth airport is currently in the throes of delivering the long-awaited “one airport” for Western Australian travellers. The $5 billion overhaul will see a new parallel runway, new terminal facilities, multistorey carparks and even the airport’s first hotel.

Last year, for the first time in 20 years – Qantas launched direct flights from Perth to Paris in time for the 2024 Olympics.

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson previously told news.com.au that expanding the airline’s international network out of WA will result in Perth becoming the second biggest air hub in the country behind Sydney.

At the time of the launch, Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson said having the flights out of Perth to Paris was “incredibly important” for the airline and the state of Western Australia — and played a pivotal role in the airline’s expansion on long-haul point-to-point travel into European nations.

“Perth is an incredibly important hub for us,” Hudson said in July 2024, noting in years to come Perth will be the second biggest air hub in the country behind Sydney.

“This is the first time we will be serve France from Australia mainland. Passengers will be saving three hours travel time to the other routes that serve Paris.

“Perth to London has been incredibly successful for us, Perth to Rome is doing incredibly well. We are incredibly excited about what [Perth to Paris] will unlock.”

Perth Airport’s Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer Kate Holsgrove said in a statement that the expansion of new routes out of WA is “great news” for the state.

“Perth is a dynamic, expanding hub with incredible growth opportunities and we remain focused on working with our airline partners to grow aviation connectivity to create more opportunities for Western Australia’s tourism industry and provide more options for Western Australians to travel,” she said.

Fares for the new Perth to Auckland and Perth to Johannesburg are available now for purchase, with the inaugural Perth to Johannesburg service taking off on 7 December 2025 and inaugural Perth to Auckland service taking off on 8 December 2025.
