How to book a seat on the last ever flight of Qantas’ Boeing 747

The Australian airline has announced it will be giving its frequent flyer members a chance to score a seat on its last ever flight.

Qantas is throwing the Queen of the skies the ultimate farewell party — and you’re invited.

The airline has today announced it will be giving Frequent Flyer members the opportunity to book a seat on the final ‘Points Plane’ voyage of the Qantas Boeing 747 — headed for Los Angeles.

From today until midnight September 2, Frequent Flyer members can use their points to score a seat on the very last commercial service of VH-OJU, a Boeing 747-400 delivered to Qantas in 2000.

The historic flight is set to depart Sydney for Los Angeles on 13 October 2019, and Qantas members will have exclusive access to premium cabins, and plenty of in-flight goodies and giveaways.

If you’re a little low on points, don’t fret. Any remaining seats that haven’t been booked by September 2 will be open to paying passengers. As for the trip home, return flights can be booked as a standard commercial ticket or reward seat booking.

The ‘Points Plane’ kicked off earlier this year with a similar flight bound for Tokyo during the Rugby World Cup. The new initiative aims to reward members and provide more redemption opportunities — and there’s plenty more to come.

“We know our members love to redeem their points on travel, so we’re excited to be able to give them new ways to access these rewards,” said Qantas Loyalty CEO Olivia Wirth earlier this year.

“Member-exclusive flights mean more redemption opportunities for our members and less time searching for reward seats.”

Since its delivery in 2000, VH-OJU has flown approximately 80 million kilometres — that’s the equivalent of 20,000 trips around the world. Once the plane arrives in Los Angeles, the aircraft will be transferred over to a new operator to continue her flying career. By the end of 2020, Qantas will have phased out the remaining six Boeing 747-400ER aircraft from its fleet.
