Hotel horror stories you’ll never forget
THESE nightmare stories from hotel employees will make you want to avoid staying in one for a very, very long time. You’ve been warned!
AS MUCH as we all like to ignore the truth about how dirty hotel rooms can be — if you don’t think about it, it’s not real, right? — some strange, even disturbing things happen in hotels across the country on a regular basis.
And it’s not just motels and seedy one-stars that fall victim to the indescribable, unbelievable antics of a niche group of nightmare guests. Unfortunately, luxury resorts are not exempt from gross behaviour.
Reading these housekeepers’ and doormen’s absolute worst job experiences, shared via Reddit, will likely put you off your next booking for a while. In fact, you might not want to holiday in a hotel ever again. You’ve been warned!
Spare hand
I found a hand under the bed. Like, inside the bed box. Complaints started coming in and the entire corner of the building was complaining on the first hot day of the year. I later found out that it was a drug deal gone wrong, and the guy was found dead earlier that year in the room missing a hand. They didn’t find it then, but I did later. — berthejew
Animal collection
One week we had a family renuinion in town and all 60 of them stayed at my hotel. The third day they’re there, I keep getting calls from the third floor about this putrid, oppressive smell ... I get to the third floor and the smell is absolutely horrible.
I go in, check the bed for dead grannies, then start investigating. Nothing under the beds, nothing in the closets, what the hell is this smell? So I go into the bathroom ... There was a half skinned deer carcass in the tub, which was full of bloody water, there were fish in various levels of skinning and decomposition hanging from wires strung all over the bathroom. There were a couple dead rabbits on the counter. - _niggle_
Bad pooches
Front desk worker here. Worst story from our housekeepers: pregnant housekeeper had to clean up after a woman with five dogs who didn’t bother taking them outside. Whenever they pooped in her room, she just covered it with towels and walked all over it. Needless to say we took the room down for maintenance for a couple of days. — ranranbolly
Bondage suite
My buddy used to work the graveyard shift at a hotel and when it was quiet he had to take food that people had ordered to their rooms. Late one night he goes to deliver the trolley of food to a room, he knocks in the door, a guy opens the door in a full leather gimp (bondage) suit with his (privates) sticking out...
Standing behind him was a giant hairy guy, completely naked, holding a whip. They gave him a $50 tip though, so he was happy.

Sex toy overload
At a Dallas hotel 10+ years ago. Had to answer a MOD call for lost & found items from a maid. There were 20+ sex toys in a large suite left behind by a VIP client. Go to log them in and realise this client is coming back in a few weeks with a large convention. Missed seeing the look on their face when their items were returned. — counterslave
Ultimate vengeful guest
Used to work at a hotel as a maid ... I open the door slightly, and realise there is a guy still in the bed. I tell him it’s past check out and he needs to hurry. I notice he had been smoking in the room, so I am on my way to the reception to tell the receptionist that he needs to pay the $500 dollar fine for smoking in the suite ...
I go back up to the suite, open the curtains and the windows when I notice a smell, aside from the cigarette smell. I walk over to the bed and I notice something brown. lift the cover and there’s s*** all over the bed under the cover! As I look further, I see a trail on the floor (carpet!) all the way to the bathroom and smeared all over, the walls and the toilet, sink everywhere!!!
Strategic condom
Condom on a remote. Missed finding a dildo under a bed. A kid found it though. They weren’t happy. — PraiseIPU
Drugs galore
Never been a maid, but I’ve worked the front desk so I’ve heard plenty of stories. [A] guest left a bunch of used syringes and wads of bloody toilet paper in the bathroom, and the toilet was clogged with plastic baggies (from drugs, we assumed) and filled with diarrhoea. — theresalwayspiranhas
