Fed up hotel guest rearranges hotel room so he can charge his phone

IT IS admittedly a ‘first world problem’ but Jake Archer was sick of it — so he took matters into his own hands.

A FRUSTRATED businessman came up with the perfect solution to the “first world problem” of not having a plug socket near his hotel bed — by rearranging the Premier Inn room entirely.

Engineer Jake Archer works away from home at least once a month but is routinely irritated by budget hotels only having one plug socket that is nowhere near the bed.

The 32-year-old admits the inconvenience “drives him insane” as either his phone dies while using it in bed or he has to jump out of bed when the alarm goes in the morning, losing opportunity to use the ‘snooze’ button.

When Mr Archer encountered the problem yet again while staying at a Premier Inn in Bridgend, in the south of Wales, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

A photo of his handiwork shows how he moved the double bed across the room on his own, so that it sat alongside the dressing table and TV, despite almost blocking the toilet door and being just two feet from the entrance.

Premier Inn has since claimed that many of their rooms do now have plug sockets near the beds but not all of their rooms had been upgraded yet.

Mr Archer, from Birmingham, England, said: “It drives me insane. I think this is one of those first world problems that a lot of people find very annoying.

“The alarm goes off and your phone is on the other side of the room so you have to jump out of bed — you don’t get to use the snooze button.

“As many people do, I like to lie in bed and check through all my social media pages before I go to sleep but I can’t do that if the plug socket is on the other side of the room.

“Every phone battery only lasts about a day nowadays, so most people charge their phones overnight and many people like to have their phone next to them.

“You have to choose between charging your phone and being out of the loop with social media or having the phone next to you and having the battery die.”

At first Mr Archer moved the bed as a silly joke between him and his friends in a group chat.

“It was pretty easy to do as the beds are on wheels,” he said.

“It made my stay that little bit easier. I was in the prime position though, not only could I charge my phone but I didn’t even need to leave the bed to put the kettle on.

“If I needed the toilet I could just roll out of bed and into the bathroom. It was brilliant.”

He added: “I have noticed this in lots of hotels — the plug socket is often on the other side of the room with the table ... I have no idea why they won’t put one near the bed.”

A Premier Inn spokesman said: “We know many customers like to charge their phones in bed and while the vast majority of our rooms do indeed feature bedside plug sockets, that’s why we’re already in the process of upgrading the remaining few.”
