THERE’S something in the water at Backpack Oz.
At least six couples have become engaged after meeting at the Adelaide hostel in the past decade.
Sam Twelftree, who co-owns the family business with siblings Tom and Penny, says they caught onto the trend by keeping in touch with past guests on social media.
“It starts off as gossip at the hostel, then we watch them on Facebook and see them travelling around together, moving to the same country and then they get engaged and get married,” he said.
“We’ve had French and English meet, Dutch and Germans meet — all different nationalities in a big melting pot of love.”
Lucy Flatman, 33 and Aaron Morley, 30, both from different parts of England, met at Backpacker Oz in June 2009 and are planning to get married next year.
“I fancied the pants off Lucy but for three months we were just friends,” Mr Morley said.
“We went our separate ways but kept in touch over Facebook. I was in New Zealand and Lucy said she was coming over ... it all went from there.”
Following a “very romantic” proposal at Bristol’s Clifton Suspension Bridge in November 2012, the pair are looking to ditch the backpacks and settle down for good — in Adelaide.
They’re currently living in New Zealand.
“Adelaide has always been our favourite city; when travelling we always spent longer in Adelaide than anywher else,” Ms Flatman said.
