A young boy’s pet turtle is safely back in the hands of its owner after firefighters from the NSW Central Coast were called in to conduct an unusual rescue attempt.

The unfortunate reptile had fallen from the boy’s home in The Entrance onto a first floor balcony below.

With the occupants of the home unable to be contacted, the turtle remained stranded on the balcony for two days.

Left short of options, the shell-shocked boy contacted Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) in a desperate bid for help.

A crew from the nearby Bateau Bay Fire Station responded to the call just after noon on Tuesday.

Thankfully, they were able to use their ladder to access the first floor unit and retrieve the uninjured turtle.

For the hardworking fireys spending their holiday season away from family, to be able to hand the grateful boy back his favourite pet was reward enough.

“We’re prepared for anything, whether it’s house fires and other large events or reuniting an owner with their trapped pet,” a FRNSW spokesperson said.

“As firefighters a lot of what we go to is quite traumatic, but this is a feel-good story and our crews just love to help people.”
