Gang of sharks caught attacking saltwater crocodile

Extraordinary footage has captured a truly “only in Australia” moment as a group of sharks aggressively circle a crocodile in the Northern Territory.

Jessie Leigha, a cruise worker and professional angler, captured the incredible vision last week, which shows the sharks hassling and supposedly snapping at a lone saltwater crocodile.

Ms Leigha was fishing aboard the vessel Wildcard off Wessel Island, remote waters off Arnhem Land, when the footage was recorded.

“The sharks in Cape Wessel, they’re just in abundance, as many people know, and they tend to follow any boats around or especially us – we seem to attract them a lot,” she told the NT News.

She added that the sharks on that evening aimed at the lonesome reptile.

“I think the sharks were not happy with it and tried to take a chunk off it,” she said.

“Having the sharks and the crocodile, we were all just so fascinated and blown away because we hadn’t seen them together.

“We all grabbed our phones out to take a video and then, ‘oh look, the crocodile came out to say hi’, and tried to eat our rope, and then the shark took him.”

The croc didn’t stay long after the nip, swiftly drifting into the darkness as the sharks remained by the boat.

The Wildcard crew has had many animal encounters, including manta rays, crocodiles, whalesharks, and pilot whales.

Sharks, particularly the hyper-aggressive bull sharks, are known to attack saltwater crocodiles on occasion in northern Australian waterways.

Ms Leigha said the Wildcard crew are no strangers to animal encounters.

“We’ve had manta rays swimming beside the boat many times over the years, you see jumping sharks,” she added.

“We’ve had crocodiles charge at our boat and jump... right beside one of our tinnies while we’ve had guests on board, so they were lucky enough to experience that out in the wild.

“Whalesharks, pilot whales, we get all that, and everything’s amazing.”

Ms Leigha’s video was flooded with comments from stunned social media users.

“Where in the nightmare puddle is this?” one shocked viewer wrote, while another labelled the clip “peak Australia”.
