Social media users warned about new scam linking to Sydney airport

Social media users are being warned of an online scam linking to one of Australia’s major airports.

Travellers are being warned of a lost baggage scam pretending to be linked to Sydney airport.

The scam is circulating on social media and attempts to sell suitcases that are alleged to have been lost at Sydney International Airport and left unclaimed for six months.

A post on multiple Facebook pages claims the suitcases can be bought for just $3.

“Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport sale lost luggage that has been in store for more than 6 months,” the post reads.

“According to the regulations it has to be disposed, but we have decided to sell it for just $3 each.”

The scam then asks customers to click an “order” button and fill out details.

Accompanying the post is a photo showing dozens of bags lined at the airport.

“Lost luggage $3,” a sign says.

The comments are filled with fake accounts saying they have placed orders.

The fake customers have also posted images showing expensive clothes, electronics and luxury items in an attempt to lure unsuspecting people into the scam.

“I’m not sure how it works, but all shoes are my size, other clothes a little bigger, but I don’t mind,” one user wrote.

The scam attempts to link back to Sydney airport, either having “Sydney” or “Kingsford Smith” in the title.

An airport spokesperson said the scam had been reported to Facebook but was urging social media users to stay alert.

“We would urge everyone to stay vigilant to social media scams and only trust information from Sydney airport’s official verified accounts,” the spokesperson said.

Sydney airport does hold lost property auctions for unclaimed luggage, but the money is donated to charity.
