Google has released its top searches for 2023, revealing exactly what we’ve been looking for over the past year.

This is what Australia searched for this year.

Google has left Aussies with a comprehensive snapshot of the year that was … in terms of what we searched online anyway.

According to the leading global search engine, Google searches echoed the nation’s collective interests, ranging from national news events to the latest in sports, entertainment, and even cooking.

Aussies fervently Googled November’s 14-hour “Optus outage” seeking answers, which took out 2023’s most Googled Australian news event in Australia.

Meanwhile, conflict captured Australians with queries about the “War in Israel and Gaza” inundating the search engines.

October’s Voice “Referendum results” sparked the third highest amount of searches — with people wanting to know about the future of governance and representation of First Nations people in Australia.

The name “Andrew Tate” came in fourth place in 2023 Australian news searches.

Nature’s fury made its mark when a “Melbourne earthquake” rattled Victoria’s capital in October.

And the “Submarine” (Titan submersible implosion) also captures Australia’s curiosity.

“Turkey earthquake”, India’s “Chandrayaan-3” space mission, allegations surrounding “Russell Brand”, and “NSW election results” finished off the list of 2023 events that piqued Australia’s interest, according to Google.

In sport, Australians showcased their passion for competition by turning the spotlight on their favourite athletes. Matildas stars “Sam Kerr” and “Mary Fowler” dominated search trends with first and second place.

Boxer “Tim Tszyu” and firebrand independent senator “Lidia Thorpe” became household names in 2023.

The most searched movies for 2023 were Oppenheimer,’ ‘Barbie,’ and ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once.’

While the loss of beloved figures like “Matthew Perry”, “Tina Turner”, and “Jock Zonfrillo” were also reflected in the results.

In the culinary realm, Australians, it seems, were keen to learn “Coronation quiche”, “Grimace shake”, and “CWA Anzac biscuit” recipes.

Sport-loving Australians couldn’t get enough of the successful “Cricket World Cup” campaign, The Ashes, and the FIFA “Women’s World Cup”.
