Shocking reason big car took up two parking bays

It’s a car park scene that will boil almost any Aussie’s blood, but there’s actually a perfectly simple reason its completely allowed.

Cars parked across two bays in a jam packed car park are an all too common source of frustration for Australians.

The act has seen vehicles across the country targeted by nasty handwritten notes and led to their drivers being ruthlessly shamed in nasty online forums.

Motorists behind the supposed shonky parking jobs often find themselves on the end of unflattering insults like “ignorant pig”, “knob jockey” and “low-life”.

While some drivers truly may have an inability to park with consideration for other drivers, there is actually a perfectly simple, and legal, reason that excuses a big portion of Australians.

Parking across two bays is permitted for many drivers who hold an ACROD permit, as was explained by a West Australian driver in a post to Facebook this week.

She noticed someone had taken photos of her vehicle outside Bunbury Forum, in the state’s southwest, and rushed to defend herself with photos of her own.

“I’m just posting here to get in before the turkey who took photos of our car at Woolworths Bunbury Forum,” she wrote this week.

“Holders of ACROD permits are legally allowed to park across two parking bays (as demonstrated in pictures) if there are no designated ACROD bays available.”

She claimed to have previously been informed personally by ACROD staff and parking rangers that the move was allowed.

While there were no black and white rules permitting or banning it, news.com.au understands ACROD permit holders were subject to the rules laid out by whoever monitored the car parks.

Given each person with a permit had varying levels of needs, ACROD said the matter was complex and could not be approached with one blanket rule.

People responding to the post were surprised to learn parking across two bays was allowed.

“A lot of people don’t realise that you are allowed to do this, good on you for speaking up about it,” one comment read.

“Sometimes people have to park across two bays like what you did for a very good reason. I just wish people wouldn’t mock others without finding out the full truth,” another wrote.

“That’s good to know. The turkey mustn’t have been aware,” someone else said.

People behind posts mindlessly shaming drivers without knowing if they had special needs were described as “gutless”.

Many drivers to feature in the same parking shaming Facebook group have been ridiculed for taking up more space than they needed.

A white Holden Colorado was recently shamed for parking over a white line in a 10-minute parking spot.

In an act of revenge, another driver parked his Mazda 4WD so close that it would have been impossible for the Colorado driver to open their door, then snapped a photo.

“Sucked to be the driver of the white one,” he wrote in a post to Facebook.

While some couldn’t get enough of his act and felt the ute driver had it coming, others suggested his manoeuvre was unnecessary.

Someone described the Mazda driver as a “bloody legend” while another said his act was “gold”.

“I would do the same if you can’t park properly that’s what you deserve,” another wrote, while one motorist wrote: “I say suck it to the driver of the white car”.

“Excellent revenge. Love it,” another said.

Others however thought the move was entirely unjustified and proposed there could have been a reasonable explanation behind the ute parking over the line.

“Did anyone think that maybe the driver or passenger had a disability so needed extra space to get in/out? Parking ‘normally’ does not provide that space,” one person suggested.

“Why would you be so unkind?” another asked, with one driver saying the move was “so childish and unnecessary”.

“You’re just being petty. You’re just as bad as the driver you parked beside. Two wrongs don’t make a right, you should know better,” another said.

The man revealed he waited in his car for the driver to return so he could see the look on their face.

“The look on the drivers face was worth it,” he claimed.

Many were still convinced there were more productive ways to spend time.

“You really need to re-evaluate life if people’s parking bothers you so much you waste your life going around trying to teach them a lesson,” a popular comment read.
