Detail in parking photo reveals frustration behind $900 fine

The driver of a motorised scooter which got slapped with nearly $1000 worth of fines from parking in the same spot has sparked tense debate online.

They had unknowingly racked up hundreds in fines while parking in the same bay, outlined with a white marking and next to another bike.

The reason for the fines were evident in one detail that was highlighted in a photo posted to social media.

The scooter appeared to be parked beyond an arrow that indicated a “no stopping” zone.

The conundrum was discussed in responses to the post, where grounds for getting out of the fine were hotly disputed.

Many felt the fines were completely unjustified, as the scooter was in a clearly marked bay and it made sense the arrow could have meant no stopping was allowed beyond the bay.

“The no stopping sign and the road markings are not aligned I think. Could I be able to dispute the fines and also shouldn't the sign and markings be aligned?” the driver wrote.

Dozens of respondents agreed that most would presume parking inside the bay was allowed.

“I bet the sign is positioned where it is simply because that is where the wall ended and it was cheaper to screw the sign to the wall than it would have been to erect a sign post. It is obvious to any reasonable person that the sign was relating to the spaces as marked by the white lines,” one person proposed.

“You should attempt to dispute the fine, with as much documentation as necessary,” another suggested.

Many others couldn’t understand what the meaning of the marked bay was, if it was not meant to be used for parking.

“The line must mean something, yeah?” one said.

It was also widely believed that not only was council being unreasonable, the parking officer was too.

“Hard to see who was the bigger moron in this scenario. The cheap-a** council who couldn’t be bothered placing the sign properly or remarking the road, or the parking officer who thought a fine was warranted,” one wrote.

While the driver was strongly encouraged by respondents to contest the fines, there was one who felt they were actually deserving of the expensive fee.

“That’s a justified parking fine. You are well past the sign,” they wrote.

The person behind the post said since taking to social media for advice, they had requested a review in the council app.
