Melbourne traffic chaos as truck catches fire on Monash Freeway
A major Melbourne freeway has been brought to a standstill after another early morning truck fire. Motorists should expect significant delays.
Melbourne’s Monash Freeway has been brought to a standstill on Thursday morning after another peak hour truck fire.
The Department of Transport said the recycling truck caught fire near Toorak Road about 6.30am.
Firefighters have extinguished the blaze, but two inbound lanes remain closed as emergency services clean up.
The fire caused significant delays for motorists in Melbourne’s southeast with traffic stretching back to Ferntree Gully Road – more than 12km from the scene.
A Department of Transport spokesman said there was a 55-minute delay on the freeway.
The speed was reduced to 40km/h past the incident with the Department of Transport urging drivers to use Dandenong Road instead.
They said the incident was cleared about 9am but delays inbound were continuing back to East Malvern.
It comes after a ferocious toilet paper truck fire shut the Western Freeway at Hopetoun Park for about eight hours from 4.30am on Wednesday.
