Drivers left feuding after being quizzed on painful merging road rule

Drivers seem unable to agree on one particularly painful set of rules when it comes to merging.

Merging demonstration video leaves drivers divided

Intense debate has erupted after a video demonstrating how to properly merge left drivers divided.

Motorists were asked to put their knowledge to the test by RACQ on Friday which called on Facebook users to ask themselves, “how well do you know the rules around merging?”.

Fiery discussion was quick to unfold in comments to the post, which also included a video showing two cars merging together.

Two scenarios were depicted – merging from a lane without markings and merging from a lane with markings.

The point of difference seemed to confuse some drivers, with many arguing in favour of making rules the same regardless of whether there were road markings or not.

In the first example, the video detailed how in a situation with no road markings, the car that was positioned behind the other had a responsibility to give way.

In the case of road markings being present, it was the car merging into traffic that was required to give way to other cars.

While some drivers were familiar with the “simple” rules, others argued it was no surprise there was so much confusion surrounding the issue.

“I don’t claim that the activity it hard, I just believe that one rule should apply in all circumstances,” one person wrote in a comment.

“I wish these two rules were the same, whoever is in front has right of way would work,” another said.

Others expressed how it was obvious when driving that many people were unfamiliar with how the different rules applied.

“People don’t know the difference,” one wrote.

Some revealed regardless of what type of lines were on the road, they always gave way to a vehicle if it was bigger than theirs.

“I give way to anything bigger than me regardless of lines or who’s in front,” one man’s comment read.

Someone else said the different rules were near impossible to comply with, especially on older roads.

“These rules are so stupid and dangerous as the white lines (are) often worn away or cannot be seen if the road is wet,” they wrote.

Another person claimed they were one of the few people who knew how to appropriately handle the situation.

“The rules are very simple, sadly, many people are even more simple,” they said.
