Sydney Metro: Martin Place station works reveal new view of Sydney Tower

Commuters leaving one of Sydney’s new underground train stations will be greeted with a fresh view of a city icon.

Sydney Metro construction work deep under Sydney city

Sydney Tower can be seen from almost every point of the Harbour City – now it can even be spotted from underground.

Construction on Sydney’s new underground train line is steaming ahead as workers complete a 19m-long escalator tunnel to service the new Martin Place metro station.

The tunnel runs deep underneath 50 Martin Place in the city’s business hub and has exposed a new view of Sydney’s tallest structure.

Commuters exiting the future station will be greeted with a view of Sydney Tower and the iconic MLC Building, Transport Minister Andrew Constance said.

“We’re getting on with the job of delivering Sydney Metro through the city as quickly as possible,” he said.

“This completed entrance tunnel is a visible reminder that a new generation of fast, safe and reliable driverless metro trains are on their way to more of Sydney.”

It took about seven weeks to shift more than 2000 tonnes of rock to create the tunnel, which will house four escalators.

The tunnel navigates the basement of the heritage-listed 50 Martin Place.

It has been lined with 700 tonnes of shotcrete and is now being waterproofed and lined with concrete.

Martin Place’s metro station will be an “integrated transport precinct”, said to be influenced by New York’s World Trade Center station and Hong Kong’s International Finance Centre.

It will feature shopping below ground and development above under a multimillion-dollar project from Macquarie Group, which bought air rights for the site for $355 million.

The station will form part of a $16 billion new train line running from Sydney’s north shore to its southwestern suburbs.

In total, 19 new and upgraded stations will make up the 30km project between Chatswood and Bankstown.

The project, previously slated to cost between $11-12 billion, is scheduled to open in 2024.
