Hisense brings 100-inch television just in time for the Grand Final

A new television that combines a 4K laser projector with a 100-inch screen is now available in Australia.

AFL Grand Final: The ultimate preview to the big game

We’d all like to be at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, but tragically only 100,000 odd can make it in to the ground.

The rest of us will be scrambling for a good spot in front of the biggest screen we can find, sending many of us to the local pub to compete with other ticketless plebs in a contest to see who can get the most beer spilt on them before the final siren sounds.

If that doesn’t sound appealing to you there is a third option, but it’ll cost you a cool $20,000 to make it happen.

After five years of overseas success, Hisense has finally introduced its massive new 4K 100-inch laser television into Australia for the first time.

The projector that powers the 100-inch screen doesn't take up much room on its own.

Technically it’s not a “television” per se, but actually a sophisticated laser projector bundled with a screen.

The console houses a short throw projector with dual colour lasers and a specifically designed and calibrated (not to mention massive) 100-inch screen.

The two red and blue lasers combine to render more natural colours than on previous models with a single laser (Hisense is also rumoured to have tricolour laser model in the pipeline).

The included screen has been specially designed to deflect ambient light, with venetian blind style ridges sending it off in different directions.

This also makes it easier on the eyes than traditional backlit television or rear projection setups that shine light directly into your eyes.

The matte finish of the screen also eliminates glare and provides a wide viewing angle that keeps things looking the same from almost anywhere in the room, making it perfect for viewing parties with groups of people standing around (say for instance, during the Grand Final).

Unfortunately it’s not perfect.

While it looks great in the dark, like most projectors the results are less impressive in the day time.

They’re still decent and the massive screen goes some way towards making up for it, but the colours do get somewhat washed out.

Bumping up the contrast and brightness in the picture settings helps a little bit, but you’ll get better results the darker the room.

As well as the projector, the console also contains a 110 watt sound system with 14 speakers tuned by JBL, and a wireless 6.5 inch subwoofer for extra bass.

There’s also a built-in free-to-air television tuner and a smart OS with built-in apps for Netflix, YouTube, Stan and other streaming services.

Two buttons on the remote give quick access to Netflix and YouTube while others are found in the menu.

Hisense offers a three-year warranty on the kit, and the lasers are projected to last for more than 25,000 hours before they noticeably lose brightness.

This roughly equates to around 15 years of watching TV for four hours a day, but if you’re the kind of person to blow 20 grand on a set up like this you’re probably not keeping it that long anyway.

The kit is available now in select JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and Harvey Norman stores.

While it will set you back $19,999, for that price you get free in-home installation within 25 kilometres of the store you bought it from.

But you’ll have to act pretty quick if you want to factor the Hisense into your grand final plans.

The bounce is scheduled for 2.30pm and Channel 7 is the only place to watch it live.
