Cyberpunk 2077 developers CD Projekt Red offer refunds on PS4, Xbox

The developer of one of the most anticipated games of the decade is apologising and promising to fix it less than a week after launching.

Cyberpunk 2077 developers CD Projekt Red (CDPR) have apologised and offered refunds for gamers who aren’t happy with the long-awaited title’s performance on PS4 and Xbox One.

People have waited eight years since first hearing about the game for it to actually come out, and faced multiple delays this year alone.

While the game more-or-less runs fine on PC, those who have played (or unsuccessfully attempted to play) the game on PS4 or Xbox One consoles, released over a year after Cyberpunk was first announced, have reported it runs like “hot garbage”.

Following a widespread backlash since the game released last Thursday, the developers have now apologised and offered refunds, while vowing to fix the game.

It began by addressing a major complaint: That reviewers who were given early access to the game (including news.com.au) were only given codes for PC, and the game wasn’t shown running on consoles until after it launched.

CDPR said this prevented gamers from making “a more informed decision” about their purchase and conceded it should have “paid more attention to making it play better” on the consoles.

The developers also promised to fix bugs and crashes that have plagued the game, with some updates already released and more to follow over the next week.

Two giant patches next month and the month after “should fix the most prominent problems gamers are facing on last-gen consoles”, but CDPR warned they “won’t make the game on last-gen look like it’s running on a high-spec PC or next-gen console” but it will at least be “closer to that experience than it is now”.

CDPR said it would “appreciate” if gamers gave it a chance to fix the game but said it would give refunds to people who didn’t want to wait.

The problems with Cyberpunk emerged quickly after it launched on consoles and people have been trashing the game.

Even Tesla founder Elon Musk, who appears to have a brief cameo in the game, joined the pile on.

He responded to the statement with a screenshot from online message board Reddit from a user who said they took a week off to play the game but were so disappointed they were crying themselves to sleep at night.

He also reported that he’s played a bit of the game but appears to be on a PC, where the problems with the game are less pronounced.
