Brazilian gamer arrested after posting footage after allegedly killing Call of Duty: Mobile rival

A teenage gamer in Brazil has been arrested for murder after posting grisly footage online allegedly showing the victim’s bloody body.

A Brazilian gamer has allegedly confessed to killing a female professional Call of Duty rival after uploading video of her bloodied body to social media, according to reports.

Guilherme Alves Costa, 18, allegedly stabbed Ingrid Oliveira Bueno da Silva, 19, in his Sao Paulo home, where she had gone on Monday to take part in a competition of Call of Duty: Mobile, the Times of London reported.

Her body was reportedly later found in Mr Alves Costa’s home by his brother.

Fellow gamers raised the alarm after Mr Alves Costa – who played online under the name “Flashlight” for the team “Gamers Elite” – posted grisly footage.

“You’re thinking it’s ink or that it’s edited or something, but it’s not,” Mr Alves Costa reportedly said online as he laughed.

He also said he had written a 52-page book to explain his motive, which police are currently investigating.

Mr Alves Costa reportedly fled the scene but police were called when his brother arrived home and found Ms Bueno da Silva’s body.

Mr Alves Costa is reported to have called his family to say he would commit suicide, but his brother talked him out of it, encouraging him instead to turn himself into police, which he did, according to the Mirror.

He was then arrested for killing Ms Bueno da Silva in the suburb of Pirituba in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on February 22.

When police arrived at his home, they asked him for a motive in the crime, The Times reported.

“Because I wanted to,” he reportedly said, adding later: “I know the seriousness of this situation.”

Mr Alves Costa is said to have told investigators that the victim had “crossed [his] path,” according to the Mirror.

Ms Bueno da Silva, whose online name was Sol, competed professionally for a group called Fantastic Brazil Impact.

“She was an extraordinary person, whom we will remember every day that the sun rises,” the team said in a statement, according to The Times.

A Gamers Elite rep told local media that the team’s leadership had never met the alleged killer and expressed shock.

The video gaming industry has experienced a sharp rise in global sales amid the coronavirus pandemic, with billions of people spending more time in their homes and seeking distraction in lockdowns.

In Latin America, the e-commerce portal Mercado Libre reported a 200 per cent spike last year in sales of merchandise connected to gaming, The Times reported.
