Tim Cook says Apple has some desktop computing updates in the pipeline
THERE is one product in particular that Apple fans have been wondering about lately, and Tim Cook says he has something in store.
IT WAS the humble desktop computer that catapulted Apple to fame and notoriety among technophiles, and later, the public at large.
And according to the company’s new CEO Tim Cook, the tech giant has not forgotten about its roots.
The man who took over from the enigmatic Steve Jobs at the helm of the beloved company has assured his employees — and as a result Apple fans everywhere — that it is still strongly committed to desktop computing.
The desktop computer has been a glaring omission from the product line of recent MacBook announcements. In fact it’s been years since much of Apple’s line-up of desktops have been updated.
The Mac mini (Apple’s first computer to ship without a display, keyboard or mouse) was updated every year from 2007 to 2012, and then once again in 2014. The more powerful version the Mac Pro was once consistently updated but hasn’t received any love for about three years.
The more mainstream iMac computer has been update annually for the past five years, except for 2016.
But desktop enthusiasts can rest assured, Apple has something in the pipeline.
According to comments made by Tim Cook on an internal Apple online employee message board which was obtained and verified by TechCrunch, the company is aware customers have been wondering about the apparent neglect of the desktop computer.
“The desktop is very strategic for us. It’s unique compared to the notebook because you can pack a lot more performance in a desktop — the largest screens, the most memory and storage, a greater variety of I/O, and fastest performance. So there are many different reasons why desktops are really important, and in some cases critical, to people,” Mr Cook wrote.
“The current generation iMac is the best desktop we have ever made and its beautiful Retina 5K display is the best desktop display in the world.
“Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we’re committed to desktops. If there’s any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our road map. Nobody should worry about that,” he wrote.
So if you’re keen for a new Apple desktop, just sit tight.
