A new tank hero has been revealed for Overwatch 2, with a release date given during the Overwatch League Grand Finals.

The new hero is called Ramattra, and long-time players will know the name from the game’s lore, with the character first appearing in the game’s lore as far back as 2019. Ramattra will be a tank hero, which are heroes with high defensive capabilities designed to protect ally players and draw attention away from more fragile heroes. Other heroes in this class include the fan-favourite D.Va and the Australian-inspired Junker Queen. The new hero will launch next month on December 6.

In a blog post on Blizzard’s official Overwatch 2 website, the company says that in Overwatch lore Ramattra is a former war machine who turned to a life of protecting others, following ideals similar to fellow hero Zenyatta. Eventually, the hero sought to do more for the world, and became the leader of the extremist group Null Sector, which uses violent means to achieve rights for artificial intelligence.

Ramattra will be one of many new heroes in Overwatch 2 that is locked behind a battle pass at first, requiring players to play a large amount of games to unlock the hero for normal play or fork out for earlier access. Like previous hero Kiriko, players will have to spend roughly $15 AUD in Overwatch Coins on the game’s premium battle pass to unlock Ramattra instantly, while players who opt not to pay will have to progress through 55 levels of the free battle pass.

Blizzard’s premier team-based shooter has been in hot water of late, after an Overwatch 2 hero was disabled over a game-breaking exploit. The hero, Mei, was disabled after an exploit involving her Ice Wall ability allowed players to illegitimately enter areas of the map that were not intended to be accessed. Blizzard plans to have the character re-enabled and the bug fixed by the time Ramattra is introduced to Overwatch 2 next month.
