Streamer apologises for deepfake porn scandal

A man has tearfully apologised alongside his wife for watching digitally altered porn after he was caught out by viewers of his stream.

Banned streamers top YouTube’s 2022 most watched

Popular Twitch streamer Atrioc has issued a tearful apology alongside his wife after a viral clip of his stream showed he had been watching “deepfake” porn of other women streamers.

As reported by Dexerto, a clip from Atrioc’s stream was posted to Reddit, showing the streamer’s open windows during the stream. One of the windows was seemingly a web browser tab, open on a page that showed deepfake porn depicting streamers like Pokimane.

Deepfakes are a newer technology that uses AI to digitally alter existing video to look like it depicts somebody else, often without the consent of the person it’s depicting. While unethical, the practice is typically not thought to be illegal in most countries, although the UK is planning to make it an offence.

The Atrioc clip was seen by thousands of viewers on Reddit, as well as shared to Twitter where it was seen by thousands more. Shortly after the clip went viral, Atrioc and his wife went live on Twitch in a teary exchange to apologise for the incident.

Atrioc claimed that he was led to the site via a targeted ad on Pornhub, claiming that he had previously spent hours researching AI in his free time.

“I’ve been reading all this stuff about AI art, about deepfake music and everything,” Atrioc said, “This is so embarrassing. I was on Pornhub, I was on a regular f***ing website, there was an ad on every video. I click it, and then I’m in this rabbit hole.”

Atrioc continued, “I don’t know, I got morbidly curious and I clicked something. It’s gross and I’m sorry. I really f***ing am. It’s so embarrassing”.

After Dexerto shared a clip of the apology on Twitter, one of the streamers whose image appears on the deepfake website, Sweet Anita, said that the tweet was how she found out that she was on the site.

“I literally choose to pass up millions by not going into sex work and some random cheeto encrusted porn addict solicits my body without my consent instead,” Sweet Anita said, “Don’t know whether to cry, break stuff or laugh at this point”.

Pokimane, another of the streamers featured on the website, has yet to make a comment, but recently revealed that she was scared of future AI streamers, saying that it was “kind of scary” how good AI has gotten.

Twitch is no stranger to drama. Another controversial streamer, Adin Ross, was slammed by other streamers after he said that “hot tub” streams should be banned. Ross had previously participated in a hot tub stream with streamer Amouranth, a fact that many have pointed to as evidence of hypocrisy.
