Blizzard has announced a last-minute delay to an Overwatch 2 patch that was supposed to fix a game-breaking exploit affecting one of the game’s heroes.

In a blog post on the official Blizzard forums, Overwatch 2 community manager Craig Simpson revealed that the update, which was supposed to be released today, would be delayed a few more days. The reason for the delay is reportedly due to a “critical issue” with the patch, but the post doesn’t elaborate further.

“Today’s patch is delayed as we work to resolve a critical issue. We’ll provide an update here and set the patch live as soon as the problem is addressed. This includes the upcoming balance changes, bug fixes, including those that affect Mei, and core content updates we have planned for this patch.”

As mentioned, the primary purpose of the patch was set to address issues with Mei that had the Overwatch 2 hero disabled over a game-breaking exploit. The exploit allowed the icy heroine Mei to use her Ice Wall ability to push allied characters into the geometry of maps, giving an unfair advantage to players who used her.

The patch was supposed to allow players to pick and use Mei again in-game, but it seems Overwatch 2 fans will have to wait a little longer. The patch was also set to include some “core content updates”, as well as some balance changes that some players have been eagerly waiting for. The patch is now set to release on Friday at 6pm AEDT, pending any further issues discovered between now and then.

Overwatch 2 has had a bit of a rocky start after the game went free-to-play upon launch earlier this year. Alongside a host of controversies, the game has had a bit of an icy reception from longtime Overwatch fans, with many saying that it pales in comparison to the first game. When nominations were announced for the 2022 Game Awards, Overwatch 2 only picked up one nomination for Best Multiplayer, despite being eligible for a host more.

In other game update news, a recent Flight Simulator update is hiding a retro secret. The update, released to celebrate the series’ 40th anniversary, allows players to hop into the cockpit of a specific aircraft and play some of the earliest games in the series on the console display. It’s not a particularly fun way to play the retro classics, but it’s a cute little Easter egg that rewards players for sticking with the series for so long.
