Nominations revealed for 2022 Game Awards

Nominations for The Game Awards 2022 have been revealed, showing all the games eligible to win big on December 8.

The Game Awards 2022 nominees revealed

The Game Awards CEO Geoff Keighley has taken to Twitter to announce the nominees for the 2022 awards show, with 31 categories on offer for games, developers, and content creators to take home a trophy.

The headlining event, of course, is the coveted Game of the Year award, which is awarded to the game that has delivered “the absolute best experience across all creative and technical fields”. This year, six games have been nominated for the award, ranging from the big ones like Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok to smaller games like the indie-developed Stray.

Some Australian-made games have made the list too, with Melbourne-based Massive Monster’s instant hit Cult of the Lamb nominated for Best Indie. Sadly Adelaide-based Team Cherry didn’t make the Most Anticipated category with their upcoming Hollow Knight: Silksong, but given how many huge games are coming in 2023, it’s not surprising to see the smaller ones miss out.

Predictably, the Best Family game category is dominated almost entirely by Nintendo games, with four of the five games in the category being exclusive to Nintendo Switch.

These include Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Splatoon 3, and Nintendo Switch Sports, all of which stand a pretty good chance of taking home the crown.

The only non-exclusive title in the category is Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which unsurprisingly, is also available on Switch.

As you might have guessed, the vast majority of generalist categories, like best narrative, best art direction, and best score are absolutely filled with the two biggest games of the year: Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok. One or both of them (usually both) appear in 10 of the 31 categories on offer, with God of War Ragnarok picking up the most nominations of any game this year.

It’s not surprising to see those big names in so many categories, news.com.au’s God of War Ragnarok review called it “one of the best games ever”, praising the game for its spectacular story, writing, and design, as well as its gorgeous visuals on PS5. It’s likely to pick up wins in a number of categories when The Game Awards airs on December 8.

The game was sadly not meant to be for some players, however, with some expensive God of War editions missing the game entirely. A number of players who’d purchased the game’s expensive collector’s edition discovered that the game had not been included by mistake, with the problem so widespread that a Twitter account was created to document it all and bring attention to the issue.
