Monster Hunter Rise coming to Xbox, PlayStation

A formerly Switch-exclusive Monster Hunter game is headed to other consoles, and some Xbox players won’t have to pay extra for it

‘Buggy’ Pokémon games sell 10 million copies

Capcom has confirmed that the smash hit action RPG Monster Hunter Rise will be releasing on the PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, and Xbox One on January 20.

Monster Hunter Rise will reportedly be available in full 4K at 60fps on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, and both consoles will also offer spatial audio in the game. Capcom says that the PlayStation 5 version of the game will also feature support for the PS5 controller’s adaptive triggers for ranged and shielded weapons.

Xbox players subscribed to Xbox Game Pass will be able to play the game at no extra cost from launch day, and PC Game Pass players will also get access to the game on the same day. Game Pass is a video game subscription service from Microsoft that offers hundreds of full games to players for as little as $10.95 a month.

Monster Hunter Rise initially launched exclusively on the Nintendo Switch in March 2021. It’s the latest in the long-running Monster Hunter series that has players teaming up online to hunt down vicious monsters like dragons using a variety of different weapons and armour.

The game was praised upon its launch for its quality of life changes and upgrades compared to previous title Monster Hunter: World. In particular, players were pleased that it offered faster-paced, more fluid combat, faster and easier ways to move around in the world, and intuitive weapon upgrade and food systems.

It was subsequently released on PC via Steam in January 2022, and both versions of the game received a major paid expansion, subtitled Sunbreak, in June. The Sunbreak expansion won’t be available on the PlayStation and Xbox versions of the game right away, but instead become available sometime in Autumn.

Capcom is the publisher behind a number of titles beloved by gamers, including Mega Man, Resident Evil, Ace Attorney, and Street Fighter. A 16-year-old recently had a surprise win at a Street Fighter V tournament, a victory that was so surprising that even the winner was confused about what was happening and walked off stage.

Despite all of its offerings, however, Capcom won’t be heading home with any awards next week. Nominations were revealed for the 2022 Game Awards, set to take place next Friday, and none of Capcom’s games made the cut. Not surprising, as the company released very few games this year, but likely disappointing to some fans who were hoping Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak would pick up some awards.
