M3GAN studio to make video games

The production studio famous for budget horror movies like M3GAN and Paranormal Activity has made an exciting new announcement.

Budget horror film production company Blumhouse has announced that it’s launching a new subsidiary focused on producing and publishing video games.

The studio, best known for its production work on smash hit horror films like M3GAN, Paranormal Activity, and Get Out, says that the new subsidiary will be called Blumhouse Games, and will focus on horror-themed games.

Much like the company’s film business, games produced by Blumhouse will be “indie-budget” horror games, all targeting budgets below $10 million USD. The company says that this will “enable innovation” and push developers to expand creative boundaries.

The new games publisher will be headed up by Zach Wood, who will act as the president of Blumhouse Games. Wood has spent 25 years as a producer on over 30 video games, having previously worked at Arkane on the upcoming Redfall.

“Through my time in the industry, I’ve had the good fortune of working closely with developers to bring their ideas to life,” Wood said, “There’s a unique opportunity for horror and genre in the indie game space, and I’m thrilled about teaming up with Blumhouse to meaningfully leverage the company’s brand, reputation, and creative talent”.

Don Sechler, who previously headed up finance, operations, and strategy for the Sony PlayStation brand, will be the publisher’s new chief financial officer, after having worked at Sony for almost ten years.

Blumhouse president Abhijay Prakash says that the company has been hoping to expand into games and other interactive media for some time.

“For some time we have been looking to build out a team to start accessing the growth opportunity in interactive media,” Prakash said, “When we sat with Zach and Don they articulated an approach that resonated with Blumhouse’s model and we knew it was a perfect place for us to start our push into the interactive space”.

Blumhouse Games has yet to announce any games, or reveal any developers it might be working with, but it’s expected that fans will hear more about the studio in the coming months and years.

It’s not the only new studio opening up of late. Titanfall veterans formed a new games studio, as was announced last week. The studio is made up of former Respawn Entertainment staff, who worked on games like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and more.

It came after it was reported that a new Titanfall game had been in the works, but was cancelled by EA. According to reports, the new game would have been a single-player game set in the world of Titanfall and Apex Legends.
