Genshin Impact and Wordle come out strong in the most discussed Twitter games

Mobile and international games dominate big in Twitter userbase attention spans – plus, the power of Brazilian esports.

The Top 10 Games To Play on Your Phone Right Now

Social media giga-giant Twitter has released data on the first half of 2022, including what the most-talked-about games are.

Genshin Impact takes the number one slot, no-doubt in part thanks to the vastly international audience of Twitter. Plus the game is hugely popular, has versions on all platforms including mobile, and gets regular, large updates that inspire discussion and – importantly – fan art and other creations.

The impact of having characters people enjoy writing about and drawing can’t really be over-estimated, especially on platforms with audiences composed mainly of Millennials that may have been part of Tumblr fandoms and the like. There’s a reason Twitter’s top game is Genshin Impact rather than something with more raw marketing power like GTA or Call of Duty.

Number two, making me sound like I don’t know what I’m talking about, is Wordle, the simple word game now owned by the New York Times. The reason for that is its automatic tweet at the end of each solve including the name of the game, and usually generating interest from other players, especially thanks to the ingenious coloured square emoji system for showing how well you did.

The rest of the top 10 are:

3. Ensemble Stars!
4. Final Fantasy
5. Project Sekai
6. Apex Legends
7. Elden Ring
8. Fate/Grand Order
9. Valorant
10. The Legend of Zelda

None of that should be especially surprising given the knowledge above and what’s happened this year. Three major mobile games popular the world over, one major brand with a ludicrously popular MMO attached, the biggest release of the year, the battle royale game with the most consistent updates and characters, et cetera. That hype for the next Zelda game is so high it manages to make it onto this list and Valorant beats out the other Riot Games titles is interesting, but not necessarily unexpected.

Twitter also gave more details, like the countries most discussing gaming – Japan was first, followed by the US, with Australia not in the top 10 – and various esports topics. Brazil’s League of Legends competition, CBLOL, and its various teams rated very highly, alongside Brazilian CSGO player Fallen taking the top spot for esports players.

Full data can be found on Twitter itself, naturally.
