First indie game to break one million positive reviews

Terraria has broken 1 million positive reviews on Steam, something only AAA games have done before.

Bayonetta voice actor asks fans to “boycott” upcoming game

Terraria, a 2D crafting and exploration game similar to Minecraft, became the first Steam indie title to achieve 1 million positive reviews.

First spotted by TheGamer, Terraria made history earlier today as the first “indie” title to break the milestone of one million positive reviews. “Indie” is a title that used to mean self-funded, but nowadays is applied to all games not created by massive games studios, such as Santa Monica Studios or Blizzard.

Terraria has been around for ten years, released in May 2011. Since its release, there has been a steady stream of content updates. In May 2020, the developers announced that Terraria would receive its final update, but as of September 2022, updates have continued to trickle every few months.

The crafting game joins a select few games to have ever achieved 1 million positive reviews on Steam, all of which are games by big-budget developers — Dota 2 (Valve), PUBG: Battlegrounds (Krafton, formerly Bluehole), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (Valve), and Grand Theft Auto 5 (Rockstar).

Alongside 1 million positive reviews, Terraria also maintains an “overwhelmingly positive” rating on Steam, with 97% of overall users selecting the option. “Updated for over 10 years with major additions, most positively reviewed indie game on steam, I have 744+ hours in it, cost at most $10 not on sale,” wrote one reviewer.

Re-Logic famously stated that they would never “sell our souls” and make any game of theirs a platform exclusive after the Epic Games Store came online to compete with Steam. Terraria, as of most recent data, has sold around 50 million copies — Terraria is available on phones, Switch, PlayStation and Xbox as well as PC.

In other gaming news, details about an upcoming Star Wars game from Quantic Dream may have been intentionally leaked in order to gauge fan reception, according to reports. Also, there’s drama on the grandest stage, as professional e-sports team Fnatic filed a report claiming that their opponents could hear the commentators during a game, granting them an unfair advantage.
