Cyberpunk 2077 save files can be saved from Stadia

Players can rescue their Cyberpunk 2077 save files from the dying Google Stadia using CD Projekt’s guide.

Google shuts down its Stadia gaming service, offers refunds

CD Projekt has outlined how to save your Cyberpunk 2077 save file from Google Stadia, a gaming platform that has been cancelled for underperforming.

When a game console gets phased out, prior to the invention of cloud storage, save files were often locked to the platform they were on. For example, you can’t bring an old PS2 save file of Final Fantasy X forward to the HD Remaster versions. So when Google Stadia, Google’s attempt to break into the gaming market, announced its closure earlier this month, customers, developers, and pretty much anyone who bought into Stadia were more than displeased.

While developers, some of which had games set to launch on Stadia merely days later before the announcement, scrambled to figure out how to get their games launched elsewhere, customers were wondering what to do about their game saves.

While other companies with live-service games, like Ubisoft and Bungie, have declared their intent to save Stadia players’ files and data, one game, in particular, was receiving a lot of attention: Cyberpunk 2077. The game received a resurgence of attention thanks to the new Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, and many Stadia consumers were worried about their save files evaporating with the death of the platform.

Cyberpunk 2077 save files can reach 100+ hours of playtime, so the concern is valid — it’s a huge game with a seemingly endless amount of content, and with a newly announced expansion to the game, players were rightfully concerned about losing all that progress.

CD Projekt detailed how players can save their save data by using Google Takeout, which will transfer the save file over to your PC, and can be used with PC editions of Cyberpunk 2077. Console versions can also use this data, but it will require owning a copy of Cyberpunk 2077 on the PC, transferring the save, and enabling Cross-Platform Saves via the REDlauncher.

Stadia’s closure came as a shock to everyone, including Stadia developers. While the short-lived venture is closing, customers are receiving refunds for their purchases, including console and game purchases.
