Big Final Fantasy news coming in 2023
The producer of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has said that there’s a “big announcement” for the series coming at some point this year.
Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, has teased a big announcement for the Final Fantasy series sometime this year.
The tease comes courtesy of a New Years greeting posted on the Final Fantasy website, which says that Kitase and the development team are hard at work on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (thanks, Gematsu).
“Development is picking up speed on the title I’m producing, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,” Kitase said in the message, “I’m sure many of your collective imaginations are running wild trying to picture how we’ll recreate some of the game’s most iconic scenes, and we’ll have more to share about that when the time is right”.
Kitase ends the message by saying that there’s “another big announcement unrelated to Final Fantasy 7” due to come, and promises that 2023 will be “the most exciting year yet” for the series. That’s due in part to Final Fantasy 16, which Kitase notes as coming this year. It’s not known what the big announcement could be, given Square Enix already has a packed release schedule for 2023.
The next Final Fantasy game is coming sooner than many expected, after it was dated at The Game Awards last month. While many expected Final Fantasy 16 would come towards the end of 2023, the game was given a June release date instead.
The Final Fantasy series has seen a slew of announcements and releases in recent years, with pixel art remakes of Final Fantasy 1 through 6 recently announced to be coming to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation, after almost a year of exclusivity on mobile and PC.

The series has also seen the announcement of a new rhythm game, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, which is due to launch on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on February 16. The game is a sequel to a series of rhythm games that initially launched on the 3DS.
Square Enix, the publisher and developer of the Final Fantasy series, recently doubled down on NFT games in another New Year letter posted on the company’s website. In it, Square Enix Holdings president Yosuke Matsuda reaffirmed the company’s commitment to blockchain technologies.
