Australians will need to keep their umbrellas out, with the country in for more wet, rainy days and the potential for a severe weather warning in Perth.

A cold front set to reach Perth on Tuesday afternoon could bring a “punchy spell of chilly weather” and the potential for damaging winds.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines said the cold front reaching Perth on Tuesday was going to quickly move eastwards on Thursday morning before arriving in Adelaide.

“There’s a cold front approaching Perth which is forecast to arrive on Tuesday afternoon, which could bring damaging winds,” he said.

“It will bring rain and strong winds to southern parts of South Australia and another band of showers and gusty winds across Victoria and parts of NSW too.”

Things are set to clear up for Perth on Friday, though there’s still a slight chance of showers.

The temperature will hit a top of 22C on Tuesday, with tops of 18C and 19C for the rest of the week and light winds.

Mr Hines said the Bureau of Meteorology was tracking “a couple of weather systems that are quite mobile” across the week.

“As we kick off the week there is one band of rain that is over central NSW raining over central and western parts of the state and moving eastwards at the moment.” he said.

“That will cross the NSW coast tonight and tomorrow and that will mean another spell of rain for Sydney and all of the NSW coast.”

Sydney can expect up to 10mm of rainfall on Tuesday with light winds and a top of 18C, while the sun is expected to come out on Wednesday with light winds and a top of 19C.

The rest of the week will likely alternate between partly cloudy and mostly sunny for Sydney, with the exception of possible showers on Saturday.

Brisbane, Melbourne, and South East Queensland are also in for wet days early in the week, as rain is set to move through on Monday night and Tuesday. Hobart is also in for showers. The rain across the country will be widespread but not heavy.

“It’s fairly extensive, the coverage (of the rain),” Mr Hines said.

Many Australians can take comfort knowing the dreary weather should begin to clear on Wednesday.

“To round out the week, most of the rain will clear up at the end of the week. We’ll still have a few showers across many coastlines, (but) just light showers for the most part,” Mr Hines said.

Temperatures should also be more mild compared with last week’s cooler weather; however, there may be a chilly shift towards the end of the week.

“Broadly across the country it is going to be more mild with temperatures higher both during the daytime and overnight low temperatures,” Mr Hines said.

“Although just towards the end of the week we might see the next pulse of cold air … things might cool off Friday or Saturday.”

However, it’s looking to be a wet week all around for Melbourne and Adelaide, with possible showers forecast all the way until Sunday in Melbourne and a high chance of showers across Adelaide the whole week.

The temperature is expected to hit a high of 16C on Monday and Wednesday in Melbourne before, dropping to 12 degrees for the weekend, while Adelaide will reach a high of 19C on Wednesday before the temperature drops to 14C for the weekend.

People in Brisbane should see some sun on Friday with a top of 24C and a slight chance of showers,
