Mystery monolith reappears as global puzzle goes unsolved

A mysterious shiny monolith has appeared in the Nevada desert, stumping the local cops who found it.

It is the most recent otherworldly installation to appear in recent years in North America and Europe.

Las Vegas police spotted the reflective object during a weekend search and rescue mission in a hiking area an hour north of Sin City.

“We see a lot of weird things … but check this out!” they posted to social media social on Tuesday.

“Over the weekend, Las Vegas Metro Search and Rescue spotted this mysterious monolith near Gass Peak north of the valley. How did it get up there??”

The rectangular structure is the latest to baffle the internet after they began appearing in places around the globe in 2020.

The first monolith was discovered in the Utah desert during the Covid-19 pandemic, attracting immediate international media attention.

Many have noted the object’s resemblance to the alien monoliths that trigger significant leaps in human progress in Stanley Kubrick’s classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The origins of these monoliths remain unknown, with speculation ranging from contemporary art installations to extraterrestrial involvement. Picture: Las Vegas Police Department

Since then, sightings have occurred across the globe in Australia, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Canada, Ukraine and Britain.

A common theory is that the monoliths are contemporary art installations.

Still, there has yet to be an official explanation for many, including the sculpture that has ended up in Las Vegas.

Creatives have only been linked to a fraction of those spotted around the globe.

The set of monolith mysteries began in Utah when mysterious pillars were spotted in desert and also in California in 2020.

Locals spotted another eerie monolith in San Luis Obispo County on top of Pine Mountain in Atascadero, California.

Two weeks earlier, wildlife officials found a similar strange structure in Red Rock Desert, Utah – though it has since been removed.

Shortly after, an identical monolith found on a Romanian hillside mysteriously vanished.

The four-metre monolith was spotted on Batca Doamnei Hill in the city of Piatra Neamt on November 26 – but has now disappeared.

A mysterious three-sided, three-metre-tall monolith in an Adelaide paddock appeared and disappeared in 2020.

The structure was covered in cryptic coordinates appeared at Noarlunga, next to the Seaford train bridge before it disappeared, news.com.au reported at the time, leaving behind just three metal poles.

According to Sky, an anonymous collective called ‘The Most Famous Artist’ has taken credit for the monoliths in Utah and California.

The UK got its first of many monoliths on the Isle of Wight a few years ago when a metal structure was spotted on Compton Beach, leaving residents baffled.

Two more followed, including one in Glastonbury and another on top of a hill in Dartmoor in the same year.

The Nevada find, which the police posted on their social media feed on X (formerly Twitter), generated a volley of comments ranging from awestruck speculation to the downright dismissive.

“Clearly Aliens!” one user wrote.

“Let’s crack it open may be prizes inside,” suggested another.

“Are we really gonna do this whole thing again?” asked one more cynical user.

“Just remove the trash, find who dumped it, and fine them.”
